Guerra and Nunez amongst High-A bats to watch in ’16

Every year there are big name prospects ready to blast on the scene. Last season, rookies took the league by storm and this year, Nomar Mazara and Mallex Smith are already up and the rest of the MLB is waiting for names like A.J. Reed, Trea Turner and J.P Crawford to make their big league debuts.

Working their way up the ladder are some interesting names to keep an eye on this season – Dom Nunez and Javier Guerra of the Rockies and Padres, respectively. Part of the reason to keep tabs on them has to do with their skill-set and overall game, of course. The other reason to know of their names, however, is that the organizations they are part of need help at those positions.

DOM NUNEZ – CATCHER, MODESTO NUTS (CALIFORNIA LEAGUE -COLORADO ROCKIES)

Nunez was drafted out of high school in 2013 by the Rockies in the sixth round. He’s a left-handed slugger who displays some nice power as well as a keen eye for the strike zone.

The now-21-year old had a great season last year in Low-A Asheville considering how poorly he started the season. His first season out of Rookie League and at full-season ball looked as if it was going to be a struggle. He came out of May hitting a mere .219 with a big goose egg in the home run column.

Nunez put up a modest June, but then really caught on fire. He batted .321 over the final three months of 2015, blasting 10 of his 13 home runs on the season. The most impressive stat? He struck out just 23 times in his final 190 at bats over that span, while walking 34 times, finishing with a 55:53 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season.

Yes, you read that correctly, a 20-year old had simply amazing plate discipline. John Calvagno, who scouts the Sally, mentions that the way he stays back on breaking balls — something that is exciting to see developed at a young age — adds to how exciting a hitting prospect he can be.
