NFL RUNDOWN WITH SBJ: THE SEARCH FOR MY HOME TEAM – PART VIII

It was a beautiful day in Louisiana on the last day of that rocky 4th grade year. I had found a home. School was fun again. I had great friends, with construction site battle scars we’d be laughing about, in countless reunions we’d share over a lifetime of memories. Redi-med was announcing a grand opening of a new location, and calling it the Jared & Ryan Law Emergency Center. Not really. But they probably could of with the bills we paid.

I was running into the house to share all the enthusiasm a kid could have on the official first day of summer. I walked through the kitchen and spotted my mother and father sitting at the table with that table void of anything aside from the huge map of Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey prominently displayed on it. They looked up and could see that I already knew.

If you want a perfect image of a three-second meme vid of my reaction in that moment that can best capture that crashing feeling when the floor drops out from under you (after the rug was pulled out only 10 months before), then this week’s Rundown photo header takes the cake.

The first thing you think of is, “Why are they doing this? Things finally got going for us here? Am I only going to have a life divided into segmented fragments of loved ones, while most of every world around me will be blessed with the fortunate future opportunities of getting to maintain relationships with friends they’ve had for the majority of their entire lives? Don’t they see how this is an annual emotional struggle for all of us?”

I just stood there. Nothing needed to be said. They both just looked up with sympathetic eyes, and then looked at each other. I didn’t feel like staying to look at this map. I was tired of maps.

My mother couldn’t wait to get out of Mandeville on the sole basis of seemingly taking monthly trips to Redi-med, so I think she felt her boys needed to not live next to a new development sewer that pulled an alligator out of it a month after we moved away. I swear. Even after a month removed from living in Mandeville, and ended up settling in, what she rightfully concluded a much safer ecosystem (without a heavy volume of reptiles, and developmental construction sites), having heard that story about that alligator sent my mother through the roof, and if it happened when we were still there, she might of had a heart attack.

It sets her off to this day. In fact, I intentionally set her off with it by bringing it up at Thanksgiving. It’s hysterical to hear her rant on that one of many of our geographical transitions. I’m tellin’ you. Bring up Mandeville at a family gathering and if you haven’t taken the OVER 4.5(-125) on number of times you hear alligator and Redi-med, then you’re passing up on an easy straight bet.
